My CATS Reviews
Since I’ve gotten back into CATS, I’ve come to realize that I saw the Original Run of the musical. It is still just CATS to me. This new revival is the weird thing in my eyes. I’ve gotten several people on tumblr asking for my reviews and so I translated what I could. I want to link/post them here.
Please remember – I was 11/12 – my teens for most of these.
They will/do contain non stop screaming about Mistoffelees (or lack there of) and complaints about characters/pairings/etc.
Also be aware that in the early 2000s, we didn’t have the CATS wiki. So I didn’t know the difference between London and Broadway. When I complain about characters missing, its because I didn’t know the characters/costume designs were different.
NOTES:
– The first show I saw in 2001/2002, I don’t remember much minus Misto being loud as hell and it hurting my ears. How much I loved Skimble and how I walked away in love with it all.
– 2001-2013 were the Troika Productions that were directed by Fergus Logan (Movie Tumble and London Mistoffelees)
– 2019 and 2023 were revival productions
– I was a teenager for 2001/2002, 2004, 2008 so the reviews are a bit dramatic and are fangirl ramblings. I did my best to retranslate but I can’t promise anything.
– yes I repeatedly go off about Misto/Cass I don’t know why but I’ve never liked her. 😅 apparently I’m ok with Electra and Rumple though. 🤦🏻♀️
– when I say I can’t find Alonzo or Plato/Admedus anywhere it’s because their costumes were broadway and not west end. So they didn’t look right. (I’ve come to terms with the fact that broadway Alonzo and I are mortal enemies and he beats me each time 😩 all I want is our slinky cat in white and black)
– seeing two guys together on stage and in public was a huge deal in the early 2000s. So seeing Misto go down with a Tom was HUGE to little me. Shounen Ai, Yaoi, actual TV shows that accurately portrayed same sex couples were finally hitting main stream.
– I did compare all Misto dancers to Jacob Brent (unfairly) so that’s a thing.
– I also didn’t know the difference between London and Broadway so watching Munk take several of Misto’s lines (like in the movie) was extremely frustrating and disappointing.
