CATS Review: January 26-27th 2008
In 2008, I went to see CATS around my birthday in January 2008. We went to the Raleigh Memorial Center/PNC Theater.
I did some research and my cast is here on the wiki.
My Mistoffelees was Chris Mackenthun
My Tugger was Zander Meisner
Here are some images from the CATS Wiki that I linked up above.
Below is my re-translated review:
Can I just scream like a fangirl?
I just saw CATS for the third time and it rocked.
Well asides from the “dud” Tugger. I’m starting to think they will all be bad trying to copy John Partridge.
I was able to watch Mistoffelees this time! No loud explosions just confetti – my kind of Mistoffelees number! I was so excited. The dancer was super cute and had several Jacob qualities to him. He was cute.
Once again, Munkustrap took way too many of Misto’s lines. I had looked away for a brief second right before the Jellicle Ball Invitation and quickly realized that wasn’t my magical cat singing – it was Munkustrap. Starting to get really annoyed with this – that part belongs to Misto.
When the CATS ran down the aisles we got Mistoffelees finally and I was so excited. I was relieved I had agreed to an aisle seat. He was so close.
My entire family were highly amused with the fact that I kept noticing things in the background that were going on during the main cat that was being featured. I was mainly focusing on Tugger and Misto because why not? They are my favorite characters.
To quote little me directly, “What else am I supposed to watch? I didn’t pay good money to watch Ecetera.” (as to what Etccy did to deserve this, I have no idea. Sorry girl.)
During the ball, I was extremely disappointed that Mistoffelees and Cassandra went down in the pile. I was hoping it would be Rumpleteazer since she and Misto were flirting the entire play. It was really sweet and I almost forgot about Tugger and Misto belong together.
Almost.
Also Tumblebrutus kept hitting on Mistoffelees and Tugger would give him this glance during his song like “dude, get away from my man.” And it took all of my will power not to lose it.
To quote little me directly again with a golden quote: “Tugger and Misto are star crossed lovers like Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask! You can’t separate them.”
There were funny Munk and Tugger interactions. Tugger was really against Munkustrap help with anything this show and it really looked like they were fighting. I hope they made up, siblings need to love each other.
I couldn’t find Plato or Alonzo the entire show and I was so annoyed. I don’t understand where they went. I like Alonzo, he’s cool and Plato is hot.
(To clarify, I think what happened was we saw a Broadway Alonzo so it didn’t match Jason Gardiner’s black and white costume that I was used to watching. I’m assuming the same goes for Plato vs Admedus.)
Oh and it was really funny – so like everyone knows that all the cats have a problem with Grizabella right? Well, Mistoffelees REALLY DIDN’T LIKE HER. He was so upset each time she got near him and hissed arms going up.
Oh! That’s right, at some point Munk hit Misto’s butt. Like totally swiped at him. He was misbehaving though so it made sense. It was pretty funny and I didn’t see it coming.
Little me claims the conjuring turn had 50 rotations but I highly doubt it. I had a habit of exaggerating things. I’m going to assume it was a normal amount and maybe the dancer hit the 30s.
However, I completely believe that I shouted “you did it” really loud and got shushed by my mom. (self control was nonexistent at that time) SIGH.
At the end of the play I got up screaming and clapping letting Mistoffelees know how cool he was and how proud I was of him!
